PRIVATE WELTEN IN TEXTIL
Katharina Blankes Werke sind utopisch - poetische Abbildungen und Konstruktionen von Gewändern. Sie analysiert bestehende Gewand-abbildungen und Gewänder, zerlegt diese und re - insziniert sie als neu interpretierte Gewandobjekte. Als Kleiderarchitektur und textile Skulptur, einer hohlen Gewandhülle gleich, macht sie die Darstellung des Gewandes zum personifizierten Objekt. Die Tragbarkeit wird dabei bewusst negiert. Der funktionale Gebrauchsgegenstand wird zum autarken Kunstgegenstand. Die Robenkonstruktion dient als Bildträger und als Kommunikationsmedium für die Identität des Trägers. Es sind sprechende Kleider, deren narrative Oberflächentextur die Bildbotschaft transportiert – eine persönliche Welt der Erinnerung, gebündelt und in Gewandcollagen als Geschichte formuliert. In diesen Kleiderskulpturen treffen Privatmythologie, modische Gattungsgeschichte, Naturgeschichte und Autobiografie aufeinander.
„Ich konstruiere meine Wunsch - Kleider, Phantasiegerüste. Das Gewand, als eine zweite Haut und Identität, wird abgestreift und steht als skulpturales Objekt neben mir. Diese Gewandhülle betrifft mich direkt, ist eine subtile Collage meiner Ideen des lustvollen Kleidens und Verkleidens, welche Wünsche, Sehnsüchte und mein Umfeld widerspiegelt.”
Zu sehen sind opulente Materialorgien in akribischer Detailarbeit. Filigran wuchernde, kunstvoll gewobene komplexe Netzwerke, eine Symbiose von Kunst, Mode und Design, als Malerei, oder Objekt aus Leder, Stoff und Papiermaché ausgearbeitet. Die Arbeiten sind nicht ortsgebunden, sie stehen, oder schweben frei im Raum.
Der theatralische Auftritt der Gewänder in ihrer erstarrten Stofflichkeit lässt Genuss und Verwirrung zu. Die übersteigerte Künstlichkeit dieser narrativen Such - Sucht - Textilien erstaunt und provoziert mit Ironie und Humor. Es verschwimmt die Wahrnehmung von Fiktion und Realität in zauberhaften, versponnenen Labyrinthen. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein Vexierspiel zwischen Anwesenheit und Abwesenheit von Personen, von Erinnerung, Spur, Symbol und Zeichen. Ornamente überall, Tätowierungen gleich, verschmelzen zu einer zweiten Außen(ge)wandhaut. Ebenso zeigt sich in der überbordenden Mischung des Bildinhalts eine Ballung aus Gegenständen alltäglicher Trivialkultur, sowie Essenzen märchenhafter Phantasie.
Katharina Blankes Arbeiten zeigen die pure Lust an schöner Überfülle und an verschnörkelter Üppigkeit – ein Sich - Verlieren, in einer skurril anmutenden Bildwelt. Zudem das Getriebensein, manische Sammelleidenschaft von persönlichen Fundstücken, gebündelt mit der Intention, durch meditative Musterbildung Ruhe zu erlangen. Subtil spielt die Zurschaustellung des prangenden Kleides mit dem Gefühl des Eingeschlossenseins im textilen Käfig zusammen. Anhand austauschbarer Kleiderhüllen wechselt die Künstlerin ihre Identität in der Verkleidung und schlüpft in die Rolle anderer Persönlichkeiten. Doch das Gewand kann auch zum technischen Vehikel werden, zur moralischen Maske des Anstands für das angemessene Sich - Kleiden: das Kleidungsstück als zweite, soziale Schutzhülle und Panzer. Auf diese Weise wird die persönliche Verletzlichkeit durch verdeckende, ablenkende Gewänder nach außen hin geschönt und kaschiert: eine sanfte Rache am Schönheitswahn, welche nun durch übertriebene Fülle und beißende Schönheit überboten wird. Die trotzig - energische Antwort auf ein Trauma, das „Falsche“ zu tragen. Das Verruchte und Böse, verpackt im niedlich-lieblichen Gewand.

Katharina Blanke, geboren 1975, lebt und arbeitet als Designerin, Künstlerin und Illustratorin nach sechs Jahren in Basel und Zürich, mit ihrem Mann und zwei Söhnen wieder in Berlin. Sie studierte Industrial Design und Visuelle Kommunikation in Berlin und Basel. In ihren künstlerischen Projekten befasste sie sich weitgehend mit dem Thema Mode, der Darstellung von Gewändern und Stofflichkeit. Sie nahm national und international an vielen Ausstellungen und Projekten als Künstlerin und Illustratorin teil.

PRIVATE WORLDS IN TEXTILES
Katharina Blanke’s works are utopian-poetic depictions and constructions of garments. She analyzes existing representations of clothing, dissects them, and re-stages them as newly interpreted garment objects. Serving as clothing architecture and textile sculpture, akin to hollow garment shells, she transforms the representation of clothing into a personified object. Wearability is consciously denied, turning the functional utility item into an autonomous art object. The robe’s construction serves as a canvas and a communication medium for the wearer’s identity. These are garments that speak, with their narrative surface texture conveying a personal world of memory, bundled and expressed as garment collages. In these clothing sculptures, private mythology, fashion genre history, natural history, and autobiography converge.
“I construct my desired clothes, imaginative frameworks. The garment, as a second skin and identity, is shed and stands as a sculptural object beside me. This garment shell directly affects me, a subtle collage of my ideas about joyful dressing and disguising, reflecting desires, longings, and my environment.”
Opulent material orgies can be seen in meticulous detail work. Delicately proliferating, artfully woven complex networks, a symbiosis of art, fashion, and design, crafted as paintings or objects from leather, fabric, and papier-mâché. The works are not tied to a specific location; they stand or float freely in space.
The theatrical presentation of the garments in their frozen fabricality allows for both enjoyment and confusion. The exaggerated artificiality of these narrative textile creations astonishes and provokes with irony and humor. The perception of fiction and reality blurs in enchanting, intricate labyrinths. This creates a play of ambiguity between the presence and absence of individuals, memory, trace, symbol, and sign. Ornaments everywhere, like tattoos, merge into a second external garment skin. The overabundant mixture of everyday trivial culture objects, as well as essences of fairytale fantasy, are also evident in the image content.
Katharina Blanke’s works showcase a pure delight in beautiful excess and ornate opulence—a loss of oneself in a whimsical and surreal visual world. Additionally, there’s a sense of being driven, a manic passion for collecting personal finds, combined with the intention to find tranquility through meditative pattern formation. The subtle display of sumptuous dresses aligns with the feeling of being trapped in a textile cage. Through interchangeable garment covers, the artist changes her identity in disguise and takes on the roles of other personalities. However, clothing can also become a technical vehicle, a moral mask of decorum for appropriate attire: the garment as a second, social protective shell and armor. In this way, personal vulnerability is beautified and concealed from the outside by covering and distracting garments—a gentle revenge on the obsession with beauty, now surpassed by exaggerated abundance and biting beauty. A defiant and energetic response to the trauma of wearing the “wrong” thing. The wicked and the evil, packaged in a cute and lovely garment.

Katharina Blanke, born in 1975, lives and works as a designer, artist, and illustrator in Berlin with her husband and two sons after six years in Basel and Zurich. She studied Industrial Design and Visual Communication in Berlin and Basel. In her artistic projects, she has focused extensively on the theme of fashion, the representation of garments, and materiality. She has participated as an artist and illustrator in numerous national and international exhibitions and projects.
